Music is not a good tools for introducing ideas and truths, however it is a perfect tool for reinforcing them.

So using a song to initially teach theology will always be lacking and completely difficult, because music (good music) requires a certain amount of tension that is created by using non-literal analogies and metaphors.

Psalm 96

1 Sing to the Lord a new song;
    sing to the Lord, all the earth.

A while ago while preparing to lead worship I was reading this passage from Psalm 96.  The Psalmist is encouraging an expression to God. When I started to read this my knee-jerk reaction was to focus on the action of "Sing" and on what is being sung - "a new song". I started to wonder "what way am I suppose to sing?" and "what does a 'new song' even mean?".  I started to feel a bit overwhelmed with the tasks of singing and the figuring out what new songs should be sung.  As I was thinking about this I realized that what I was preparing was a performance and that made me uneasy.
